Important Resource: International Association of Forensic Nurses
Workplace violence prevention is a growing concern, particularly when it involves employees experiencing domestic or intimate partner violence. The SOAR program—Strength, Opportunity, Autonomy, and Resilience—was developed by forensic nurse specialist Kalen Knight and his colleagues to address this critical gap in workplace safety.
By providing tailored resources, confidential support, and personalized safety planning, SOAR empowers employees to navigate these challenging situations while maintaining their well-being at work. Knight discussed the SOAR program on a recent episode of the Nurse Converse podcast with host and forensic nurse examiner Leah Helmbrecht.
Background and Development of SOAR
The SOAR program was born out of necessity when an employee approached their organization’s human resources department seeking support for a domestic violence situation that was affecting their ability to work. Recognizing the lack of structured workplace support for such cases, HR reached out to the forensic nursing program for guidance. This led Kalen Knight and his team to design a comprehensive program that connects employees with external advocates and provides workplace safety planning tailored to individual needs.
SOAR is rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with HR, legal, risk management, and leadership teams to ensure seamless integration within workplace policies. By recognizing domestic violence as a workplace issue, the program bridges the gap between forensic nursing and employee advocacy, fostering a safer and more supportive environment.
Key Components of the SOAR Program
The SOAR framework is built upon four foundational pillars:
- Strength: The program acknowledges the bravery it takes for employees to seek help. By fostering a safe and judgment-free environment, SOAR encourages individuals to take proactive steps toward their safety and well-being.
- Opportunity: SOAR provides access to resources employees might not find through traditional HR channels. This includes connections to external advocates, legal assistance, and emergency financial aid to facilitate safety measures such as restraining orders and secure transportation.
- Autonomy: The program respects the personal agency of employees, allowing them to decide how they engage with SOAR. Whether via direct communication with SOAR coordinators or trusted colleagues, employees maintain control over their level of involvement and the support they receive.
- Resilience: SOAR equips employees with tools and strategies to enhance their resilience. Safety planning teaches employees to manage their security at work and in their personal lives, including identifying safe spaces, establishing emergency protocols, and developing contingency plans for various scenarios.
Safety Planning and Implementation
A cornerstone of SOAR is its individualized safety planning, which includes:
- Workplace Adjustments: This may involve modifying work schedules, adjusting parking arrangements, or providing security escorts to and from vehicles to reduce risks.
- Communication Strategies: Employees receive guidance on discreetly signaling distress or danger, such as using coded language when calling in sick.
- Emergency Protocols: Safety plans outline clear steps for responding to potential threats, including when to contact workplace security or law enforcement.
SOAR ensures confidentiality at every stage, allowing employees to seek assistance without fear of stigma or repercussions. The program also provides ongoing follow-ups, recognizing that situations may evolve and require additional resources or adjustments.
Domestic Violence Education and Awareness
Education plays a crucial role in the success of SOAR. Many individuals, including employees and healthcare professionals, may not fully understand the complexities of domestic violence or recognize its various forms. Training sessions help staff identify signs of abuse, understand the risks of leaving an abusive relationship, and respond appropriately to disclosures.
One of the most critical aspects discussed in the program is the heightened danger victims face when attempting to leave an abusive relationship. Statistics indicate that approximately 70% of domestic violence-related homicides occur during this period. By raising awareness of these risks, SOAR ensures that safety plans are tailored to minimize exposure to harm.
Healthcare professionals also play a vital role in supporting victims. When someone discloses their situation, it signifies a significant level of trust in their healthcare provider. The program trains professionals to recognize warning signs, provide resources, and approach the topic with sensitivity and discretion.
SOAR Impact and Success Stories
Since its inception, SOAR has provided support to approximately 20 to 25 employees, demonstrating its effectiveness in bridging workplace safety and domestic violence advocacy. One notable success story involved an employee who was being stalked by their abuser. Through SOAR, they received assistance with modifying their parking situation, securing financial support for fees, and implementing a security plan that included workplace escorts. This proactive approach not only ensured their physical safety but also reinforced their sense of control and empowerment.
