Pope Francis Blessed Nurse Leila After Patient Assault, Weeks Before His Passing

Nurses are the heart and soul of hospitals, but unfortunately, they often find themselves in dangerous situations. The recent horrific assault on Nurse Leelamma Lal at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital is a chilling reminder of the violence nurses face every day. While recovering, Lal received a special blessing from Pope Francis, giving her a much-needed spiritual boost, especially since it came just weeks before the Pope's passing.

Nurse Leelamma Lal, who was critically assaulted and sustained life-altering injuries by patient Stephen Scantlebury while working at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital, received a papal blessing from Pope Francis during her recovery at a rehabilitation center in Jacksonville—a moment of spiritual significance during her challenging journey back to health.

The blessing occurred weeks before the Pope's death, providing comfort to Lal, a devout Catholic who was undergoing intensive physical therapy following the assault. While this personal moment of connection between the Pope and an injured nurse has touched many, it also highlights a much larger problem facing nursing professionals nationwide.

Violence Against Nurses - An Epidemic

Workplace violence against healthcare workers has reached epidemic proportions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare workers account for 73% of all nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses due to violence. Nurses in particular face the highest risk, with studies showing that between 25-30% of nurses report having experienced physical violence in the workplace.

The assault on Nurse Lal is not an isolated incident. A 2022 National Nurses United survey found that 48% of hospital nurses reported an increase in workplace violence—nearly double the percentage from just four years earlier. Most concerning is that these statistics likely underrepresent the true scope of the problem, as many incidents go unreported due to fear of retaliation or the perception that violence is "part of the job."

As Lal continues her recovery—bolstered by what her attorney described as the meaningful spiritual connection of receiving the Pope's blessing—nursing advocates are calling for stronger protections. These include mandatory reporting systems, increased security personnel in high-risk areas, violence prevention training, and legislative action to make assaulting healthcare workers a felony in all states.
