Ex-Police Officer Convicted of Manslaughter in Death of Black Nurse Accused of Stealing

A New Mexico jury has found Las Cruces Police Officer Brad Lunsford guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the 2022 shooting death of 36-year-old nurse Presley Eze. The incident occurred during a confrontation at a gas station, where Eze was accused of stealing beer. Lunsford, who is white, now faces up to nine years in prison.
Incident Overview
On August 2, 2022, officers responded to a 911 call reporting that a Black man had taken beer from a Las Cruces gas station without payment. Upon arrival, Officer Lunsford and another officer attempted to detain Eze, who was seated in his vehicle. A struggle ensued, during which Eze allegedly grabbed the second officer's stun gun. In response, Lunsford drew his firearm and shot Eze in the back of the head at point-blank range, resulting in Eze's death at the scene.
Legal Proceedings and Reactions
The trial lasted eight days, with the jury deliberating for approximately two and a half hours before delivering the guilty verdict. Attorney General Raúl Torrez emphasized the significance of the decision, stating, "Today's verdict reaffirms a fundamental principle: no one is above the law—not even those sworn to uphold it." He described Lunsford's actions as "an egregious abuse of power that cost Presley Eze his life."
Defense attorney Jose Coronado expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome, indicating plans to seek a review of the verdict's legal basis. "While I respect the jury's verdict, I am extremely disappointed in it." Coronado commented.

The case highlights the challenges in holding law enforcement accountable and highlights the ongoing need for discussions about police practices and community relations.
