Hannah Kimmel Juggles Two Jobs—Nurse and Flight Attendant. Here’s How

Hannah is a Chicago based nurse who splits her time between working as a nurse and a flight attendant. With close to 10,000 TikTok followers and more than 60,000 followers on Instagram, Hannah speaks to her audience about her differing careers and takes us through how she juggles the life of an RN and a flight attendant. Hannah’s increased self awareness and honesty allowed her to follow her truth as she realized early in her nursing journey that she did not want to be a full time nurse for the rest of her life: so she did something about it.
“I Don’t Think I Can Do This For the Rest of My Life”
A direct quote from our conversation on the Club Nurse Podcast, Hannah openly talked about how she did not particularly enjoy her nursing school experience–something most nurses are scared to admit! While venting to her uncle, who is a flight attendant, he planted the seed to Hannah, asking her, “Why don’t you apply ?” This got Hannah’s wheels turning, and the rest is history! Hannah understood that although she was not enjoying the nursing school experience, that maybe there was a way to still use her license as a tool while pursuing other ventures.

An Antidote to Burnout
Burnout. The word we hear constantly in the healthcare world. Through the conversation on Club Nurse with Hannah, I realized that flexibility is an antidote to burnout. Burnout is not special to the healthcare profession, but it is more common due to the nature of the work. Hannah brings the audience through what her schedule looks like and although she is considered a full time flight attendant, the schedule format is widely flexible. Combine that with per diem nursing flexibility, and Hannah has mastered the art of scheduling and has therefore avoided recurrent burnout like most other nurses.
Flight Benefits
Picture this, nurses. You work your bedside shifts at your per diem job that fills your cup and that you enjoy because you are not there working overtime every single week. Then you go to your job as a flight attendant, fly to new cities and explore with your crew, all while crafting your schedule to your benefit. Then, with your days off, you have the luxury to fly for free because your flight benefits offer you the ability to do so. This is Hannah’s reality! And she did not fall into this from sheer luck. She noticed a feeling inside that full time nursing was not the life for her and she listened to that feeling and took action.

How To Become a Flight Attendant
“The application process is not always open”, Hannah reports. Applying to be a flight attendant does require your attention. The applications open for a short window, so it is important to be informed. Hannah recommends following other flight attendants on social media who will announce applications opening or following the airline sites.
Once you apply, through Hannah’s experience, there are a couple steps from phone interviewing, to flying to the headquarters in whichever city that is located (typically covered by the airline), and then upon being hired, attending a month long training to become a flight attendant (these details may differ depending on the airline company).

If you want to learn more about this process, be sure to follow Hannah on Instagram and TikTok! She is a fountain of knowledge and maybe she will plant the seed in your own mind to branch out from the mundane if you are needing to add some spice to your life/career.
