An upcoming Scrubs reboot is stirring excitement among nurses, especially with the return of Carla Espinosa, the head nurse who remains one of TV's most beloved portrayals of nurses. Carla’s character, played by Judy Reyes, isn’t just memorable—she’s a cultural icon whose legacy continues to inspire nurses today.

‘Scrubs’ Reboot Rumors Confirmed!

After months of rumors throughout late 2024 and early 2025, ABC officially announced the Scrubs reboot in July 2025. Original creator Bill Lawrence is returning as executive producer, with Zach Braff (JD), Donald Faison (Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot) and John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) all confirmed to reprise their roles.

But it is our beloved Judy Reyes (Carla) exciting nurses most.

The new series will premiere during the 2025–2026 TV season, reuniting old friends at Sacred Heart—and introducing new faces to reflect today’s medical world. The show promises to honor its original legacy while bringing fresh stories and challenges to the hospital. No exact premiere date has been announced, but it is expected to debut midseason (early 2026).

Nurses: get ready to celebrate the return of a true TV hero, and anticipate new Carla moments that will make any shift—a little brighter.

Who Is Carla Espinosa?

Carla Espinosa is the no-nonsense, sassy, and fiercely loyal head nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Chicago, Carla overcame personal hardships—her father abandoned her family and her mother raised her and her siblings in the U.S.—to become a skilled nurse and leader.

Throughout Scrubs’ first eight seasons (2001-2009), Carla was the emotional anchor of the show, grounding its zany humor with genuine heart and wisdom. Unfortunately, she was the only character who did not return for season nine. Though she wasn’t on the show that season, she was still mentioned by her TV-husband, Turk, who said she decided to be a stay-at-home mom after a pregnancy.

Memorable Carla Moments

Carla Espinosa’s legacy was built on unforgettable scenes:

  • Carla shut down Turk’s offhand “just a nurse” comment when he gave her a brochure for a nurse practitioner program. Carla quickly made him eat his words, underscoring the importance and value of nurses beyond the label.
  • Her bold confrontation with Dr. Cox—“You may scare everybody else with those crazy eyes, but you don’t scare me”—showed Carla’s trademark toughness.
  • She taught rookie doctors not just clinical skills, but also compassion, often mentoring J.D., Turk, and Elliot with equal parts warmth and sarcasm.
  • Carla’s relationship with Turk (Donald Faison) was a series highlight, from their playful banter to their heartfelt wedding and growing family.
  • She tackled serious issues like postpartum depression and fertility struggles with candor, giving nurses and viewers alike a realistic look at life inside and outside the hospital.

Why Nurses Love Carla

Nurses are drawn to Carla Espinosa because she embodies so many real-life qualities: dedication, advocacy, and compassion.

  • Representation: Carla was one of the few major nurse characters on a physician-led show, often correcting doctors and advocating for patients. She was a strong, multidimensional caregiver, not a background prop.
  • Mentorship: Her constant guidance of interns and her support for hospital staff showcased the pivotal (and often underappreciated) role of nurses.
  • Realism: Reyes modeled Carla after her own nurse sister, giving the character authenticity that nurses recognize and appreciate. Her sister approved of the portrayal, saying, "You stole my character!"
  • Legacy: Carla’s character continues to inspire nurses to stand up for themselves and for their patients, proving nurses are more than sidekicks—they’re the backbone of healthcare.

Carla Espinosa wasn’t just a character—she was an advocate for nurses everywhere, reminding us that compassion, humor, and strength can make a lasting impact. As the Scrubs reboot approaches, her lessons about nursing, friendship, and resilience are as relevant now as ever.

So, sharpen your stethoscopes and get ready—Sacred Heart might be in for some serious healing, and Nurse Carla might just be leading the charge.
