Louisiana nurse Richard “Buddy” Howell rescued 12 cars from a flood last Thursday morning during a surprise flood, all while wearing his scrubs, according to a KATC news report.
Flooding Hits During Morning Commute
Over six inches of rain fell quickly, overwhelming drainage systems and turning streets like South Lewis into rivers. Dozens of cars were stranded as drivers tried to get to work.
Buddy headed out to help his wife, whose vehicle had gotten stuck. But when he saw how many others were stranded, he stayed to help anyone he could.
12 Vehicles Pulled Out With Local Business Owner
Buddy teamed up with Aaron Guillotte, a local business owner with a truck. Together, they used tow straps to pull out 12 cars from deep floodwater — some nearly fully submerged.
Conditions were dangerous. Water was waist-deep in some spots, and visibility was low. Buddy even had to lie in the water to hook up straps to submerged cars.
Parish officials confirmed the drainage systems couldn’t keep up with the sudden downpour.
Despite being soaked and exhausted, Buddy never considered leaving. Howell said he simply couldn’t leave people behind. "I just couldn’t tell these people no," he said. His efforts helped 12 drivers get out safely — no ambulance, no spotlight, just a nurse who saw people in trouble and acted.
