Nurse Practitioner Arrested For Overprescribing and Writing Fraudulent Scripts

Katherine Curtis, 34, was taken into custody last Thursday following an extensive eight-month investigation by a multi-agency team including detectives from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Carmel Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

According to police reports, the investigation began after several pharmacies raised concerns about Curtis's prescribing practices. These pharmacies reported suspicions that Curtis, a licensed nurse practitioner, was "overprescribing medications and writing fraudulent scripts".

As the investigation progressed, law enforcement uncovered evidence suggesting more extensive violations. Investigators allege that Curtis was not only overprescribing medications beyond appropriate clinical guidelines but also writing fraudulent prescriptions and, more alarmingly, using other nurse practitioners' identities to write prescriptions.

Curtis now faces serious charges including "unlawful dispensation of a controlled substance and dealing in a controlled substance by a practitioner". These charges reflect the gravity of prescription fraud, particularly involving controlled substances. Controlled substances, which include medications with a high potential for abuse such as opioids, are tightly regulated to prevent misuse and diversion.
