Retired Nurse Who Lost Everything in a House Fire Wins Home Renovation
- Valeria Hall, 73, a retired civil service nurse, lost her home and all her personal belongings in a house fire.
- Hall served as a nurse to Navy families in Guantanamo Bay, Jamaica, and Lake Wales.
- Tim Williams, owner of S&W Supply, selected Hall as the 2025 recipient for the annual Kitchen for Christmas program that renovates a homeowner's home.
After losing her home and all of her personal belongings in a fire, former registered nurse Valerie Hall, 73, didn’t know what to do. But then, Tim Williams, owner of S&W Supply, and his team stepped in to help.
A fire broke out in Hall’s home several months ago and triggered a propane explosion. “I just kept saying thank you Jesus, because when the gas and the propane blew… it blew through my bedroom wall,” she said.
Hall had only moved to Frostproof, Florida, within the last ten years to care for her mother and remained a part of the community even after. So when she needed her community, they delivered.
Hall worked as a civil service nurse who served Navy families in Guantánamo Bay, Jamaica, and Lake Wales. After, she worked with Native American communities in Alaska for over ten years.
Helping a Neighbor in Need
Each year, Williams and a team of partners, including Hulbert Homes and Right Way Plumbing, choose one family or individual for their Kitchen for Christmas program. Usually, the program surprises one homeowner with a holiday home renovation. This is the 20th year for the Kitchen for Christmas program.
But Hall was getting way more than that.
Williams announced that the team would be remodeling her entire home, including a new bedroom, patio, garden, an accessibility ramp, and central heating. “It’s ready for us to make her home complete,” Williams said. “Our first goal is to get you some central heat now.”
Hall’s dedication to serving others throughout her nursing career inspired countless volunteers, contractors, and neighbors to come and support the work. Many had never met her but found her story to be fascinating and wanted to give back.
“They are all angels,” she said. “It’s looking way up. It’s the star at the top of the tree.”
Hall is currently recovering from hip surgery, saying the volunteers are all angels.
