Bill Aims To Criminalize Healthcare Providers Who Administer mRNA Vaccines in Iowa

Iowa Senate Republicans have advanced a bill,  Senate File 360, that would criminalize healthcare providers for administering mRNA vaccines, including those used for COVID-19.

The Bill's Content and Potential Impact

Sponsored by state Senator Doug Campbell of Mason City, Senate File 360 proposes to criminalize healthcare providers who administer mRNA vaccines with penalties including,

  •  A simple misdemeanor
  • $500 fine per incident

Under the proposed law, healthcare providers could face not only criminal charges but also potentially lose their licenses for administering these vaccines.

If passed, this legislation would have far-reaching consequences for healthcare providers and the broader medical community in Iowa. The bill would impact several FDA-approved vaccines, including the widely used Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines.

The Uncertain Future of Senate File 360

While the bill has advanced through initial stages, its future remains uncertain. To become law, it must clear several more hurdles, including passing out of committee, gaining approval from both the Iowa House and Senate, and receiving the governor's signature.
