With the global nursing shortage expected to reach 4.5 million by 2030, J&J is stepping up to provide training, resources, and support. Many nurses are leaving the field due to burnout and low morale. This shortage leads to major gaps in care and worse outcomes for patients.

Vanessa Broadhurst, Executive Vice President of Global Corporate Affairs at J&J, said, “For healthcare to work, it takes nurses. They are leaders, innovators, and changemakers. J&J CareCommunity helps us give them the support they need to drive real change.”

What’s Inside J&J CareCommunity?

This new platform brings together programs, training, and scholarships that focus on leadership, education, and innovation — all centered on the nursing profession.

Nurse Innovation Fellowship

In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Wharton Executive Education, J&J is launching the 2025 class of Nurse Innovation Fellows. This one-year program helps nurse leaders build skills to lead change in healthcare systems.

Marion Leary, RN and Director of Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania, said, “Nurses are innovators on the front lines. Supporting their creativity and leadership helps build a stronger profession.”

Advancing Nursing in East Africa

With Aga Khan University School of Nursing & Midwifery, J&J Foundation is helping train nurses across East Africa. So far, over 3,500 nurses have been trained, improving care across the region.

Global Surgical Care Support

Through its work with Operation Smile, the Nurse Leadership and Development Initiative is giving nurses advanced clinical training and mentorship. This program has trained 2,880 nurses across 24 countries, helping provide surgery and care to over 18,800 patients.

Expanding Nurse Education

A partnership with WCEA has already brought 70 million hours of learning to nearly one million nurses in over 60 countries — especially in areas with low internet access.

Scholarships for Nurse Families

The new J&J CareCommunity Employee Family Nurse Scholarship supports nursing students who are family members of J&J employees. It builds on decades of scholarship support from the company.

NurseHack4Health: Tech Meets Care

With support from Microsoft and SONSIEL, NurseHack4Health helps nurse-led teams develop new solutions for healthcare challenges. The program has reached over 5,500 nurses and will host a major hackathon in Helsinki this June with the International Council of Nurses.

Tools for Brazilian Nurses

In Brazil, J&J and COFEN are supporting more than one million registered nurses through CofenPlay, a digital platform offering over 100,000 nursing resources.

Investing in Nurse-Led Healthcare

J&J’s Impact Ventures is investing in Kenyan health providers like Jacaranda Maternity and Penda Health, giving nurses the tools to deliver quality, affordable care in local communities.

A Long Legacy of Nursing Support

J&J has supported nurses since 1897. In 2002, the company launched the Campaign for Nursing’s Future, a $50 million effort that helped bring over one million new nurses into the U.S. workforce.

From training and scholarships to leadership and innovation programs, J&J’s latest expansion proves its continued dedication to strengthening the profession — and ultimately, improving care for patients worldwide.
