41 Hospitals Earn ANCC’s Magnet With Distinction for Nursing Excellence

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has introduced a new top-tier recognition—Magnet with Distinction—to honor hospitals that go above and beyond the already rigorous standards of the Magnet Recognition Program.

Unveiled in 2022, the distinction is reserved for hospitals that meet the highest levels of nursing excellence and quality patient care.

What Is “Magnet with Distinction”?

This elite recognition is an extension of the Magnet designation, which itself is awarded to fewer than 10% of U.S. hospitals. Magnet status is known for highlighting hospitals with:

  • High nurse job satisfaction

  • Lower RN turnover

  • Lower 30-day mortality rates

Magnet with Distinction takes it a step further. The program was created to honor hospitals that exceed the scoring thresholds required for Magnet status.

According to the ANCC, “It raises the bar to recognize top-tier organizations that have achieved the highest level of nursing excellence while addressing emerging challenges and changes in healthcare moving forward.”

How Hospitals Qualify

Hospitals must already qualify for Magnet status before being considered for distinction. Then, they must meet one of two elevated performance paths:

  1. No deficiencies in any Magnet component plus an exemplar in RN engagement

    — or —

  2. No deficiencies in any component plus at least:

    • Two exemplars in patient experience

    • Two exemplars in nursing-sensitive indicators

These benchmarks identify facilities where nursing practices directly improve patient care and professional satisfaction.
