Position Summary
The Sunbeam Nurse provides, and coordinates individualized and community-based patient care to the residents of Maine’s unbridged islands. This position identifies individual, family, and community healthcare needs; and finds effective and innovative ways to meet those needs using direct care, care navigation, case management, and technology. The individual in this role provides emotional support and is charged with building awareness and educating islanders on healthcare-related topics such as preventative and chronic health management. The Sunbeam Nurse is a positive and hopeful presence for isolated communities that lack access to healthcare-related resources, services, and support. The person in this role will share the Mission’s passion for service in Maine’s most isolated island and coastal communities, be comfortable at sea, and be happy working as part of a dedicated and flexible crew.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities

Provide health care, care navigation, and care management for island residents, staying in touch with residents whether on or off the boat

Be a welcoming and informative presence on the Sunbeam and when visiting island communities

Conduct home visits as a primary way of getting to know island residents and assessing their needs

Work with Sunbeam Director to develop telehealth and related health access policies and procedures

Prepare patients for telemedicine appointments, assist with appointments, and provide aftercare as appropriate

Incorporate telemedicine and new technologies when necessary and where appropriate

Collect patient specimens and ensure they reach the appropriate laboratory

Maintain patient consent and documentation

Identify, assess, and research community needs to determine health related trends, program directions, and goals

Bring providers, resources, and educational opportunities to islands to address individual and community related needs (i.e.: assisting with patient portal registration & access)

Plan and deliver health initiatives such as vaccines, point of care testing, and lab work

Serve as a resource for island health centers

Collaborate with and support the Island Health Eldercare network in support of islanders aging in place and their caregivers

Work with Sunbeam Director to build and maintain relationships with primary and behavioral health care providers and to establish and maintain relationships with related community organizations

Identify appropriate metrics for Island Health and participate in data collection, presentation, and analysis

Collaborate with other Sunbeam programs to build community on the islands

Qualifications

Broad nursing knowledge (e.g.: home and public health); able to work with a wide range of ages and health issues

Required Education and Experience
-
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
-
Over five years of experience as a Registered Nurse
Special Qualifications and Certifications
-
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Maine
-
Basic Life Support Certification
-
Successful completion of a criminal background check

Ability to work independently in a hybrid work environment

Availability to work whether traveling with or without the Sunbeam

Being comfortable on boats in a variety of conditions without becoming prohibitively seasick
Physical Demands

Physically able to get on and off boats and move around boats while underway

Ability to ascend ladders, carry supplies, and traverse an often-rugged environment to get to islanders’ homes
Travel Requirements

Ability and willingness to travel

Three-day overnight trip every two to three weeks

Multi-day boat trips while living with a crew in small quarters

Multi-day island trips staying in a variety of accommodations
Compensation
This is a full-time, exempt position based on a 40-hour work week. The salary for the position is $80,000 - $87,000 per year, based on experience, and includes excellent benefits.
