Sybil Garbow, a 72-year-old nurse in Minnesota with over 40 years of experience, was sentenced to 6 months in jail for assaulting a coworker and must pay $50,000 in restitution. Garbow claims she acted in self-defense.
The Incident and Charges
Sybil Garbow was charged with first-, second-, and third-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
According to court documents obtained by Insider.com, the incident occurred at Touchstone Mental Health in Fridley, Minnesota where Garbow worked. The incident took place between Sybil Garbow and her former coworker Devlin Stitt.
Garbow told Insider that she struck Stitt in the head with an aerosol can, causing a laceration, after Stitt had already hit her hand with a telephone. The altercation occurred after Stitt accused Garbow of intentionally spraying her with the aerosol can.
Feeling scared after the altercation, Garbow asked her coworkers to call 911 and left the scene. She later had a friend drive her to the police station.
Nurses React To The Charges
The conviction means Garbow loses her nursing license and career. Supporters are taking to social media where videos surrounding the case have been viewed millions of times. Many of the videos argue the punishment does not fit the crime, especially for a 72-year-old claiming self-defense.
