US Nurse and Child Freed After Being Kidnapped in Haiti

US Nurse and Child Freed After Being Kidnapped in Haiti

Update 8/9/2023

Nearly two weeks after reportedly being kidnapped in Haiti, New Hampshire nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her child have been released, according to El Roi Haiti.

“It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti,” El Roi Haiti said in a statement. “There is still much to process and to heal from in this situation, so we are asking that no attempts be made to contact Alix or her family at this time.”

The full statement reads:

“But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57).

It is with a heart of gratitude and immense joy that we at El Roi Haiti confirm the safe release of our staff member and friend, Alix Dorsainvil and her child who were held hostage in Port au Prince, Haiti. Today we are praising God for answered prayer!

We are so thankful for everyone who joined us in prayer and supported us during this crisis. “El Roi” is a Hebrew name of the God of the Bible that means “the God who sees.” It is with that vision that we now rest upon God’s truth that, “In his kindness God called you to share in His eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus.  So after you have suffered a little while, He will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation” (1 Peter 5:10). We praise God that He has proven Himself faithful as He restores, supports, and strengthens Alix and her family, the ministry of El Roi Haiti, and the community that Alix has impacted - and continues to impact - with her ministry in Haiti.

There is still much to process and to heal from in this situation, so we are asking that no attempts be made to contact Alix or her family at this time.  We will continue to release information as appropriate on our website. Please keep checking back. And again, thanks for all of the prayers and support through this incredibly difficult time.

At this time there is no additional information regarding the kidnapping.

Original Story

American Nurse Alix Dorsainvil and her child were abducted on Thursday morning while serving with the Christian humanitarian aid organization El Roi Haiti near Port-au-Prince.

A heart-wrenching incident has shaken the international community, as news surfaced of the kidnapping of an American nurse, Alix Dorsainvil, and her child in Haiti. According to elroihati.com, Alix, is the wife of Sandro Dorsainvil Program Director of El Roi Haiti who had dedicated her life to providing compassionate care to the Haitian people through her work with the Christian humanitarian aid organization El Roi Haiti, was abducted alongside her unnamed child while serving in their community ministry near the capital city, Port-au-Prince.

Originally from New Hampshire, USA, Alix Dorsainvil moved to Haiti after her husband, Sandro Dorsainvil, invited her to provide nursing care for the children in a Haitian school.

According to a statement released on El Roi Haiti's website, Alix and her child were abducted on Thursday morning while serving on the organization's campus near Port-au-Prince.

International Response and Support

As news of the abduction emerged, global attention turned to this distressing situation. The United States authorities, in collaboration with Haitian officials and U.S. government interagency partners, have sprung into action to address the crisis. The State Department has stated that the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas are their utmost priority, and they are actively engaged in efforts to ensure the safe return of Alix Dorsainvil and her child.

On the same day as the kidnapping, the State Department ordered a travel advisory for Haiti which advised nonemergency U.S. government employees and families to leave the country “due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor health care infrastructure.”
