Hurricane Irma: Woman Gives Birth As Doctors Help Over The Phone

By Angelina Gibson
Would you be able to guide a woman through delivering her own baby - over the phone - in a car - in the middle of friggin’ Hurricane Irma?
Shout out to the medical team at Jackson Health Hospital in Miami - because this actually happened. Spoiler alert: she delivered her own placenta and cut the umbilical cord, too! Women are amazing!
As multiple hospitals evacuated their patients ahead of the storm- many pregnant women who were nearing full term rushed to the remaining hospitals.
Cara Kesling and her husband were fleeing the Florida Keys - but, a category 5 hurricane was no match for baby Nayiri Storm. She decided to make her grand entrance during the same time when rescue workers stopped responding to help.
As labor progressed, Cara continued to receive support from the hospital via telephone, “We weren’t able to respond. So she delivered the placenta, also. Dispatch told her how to tie it off. She’s stable at home.” stated Garcia.
Once the storm died down and it was safe to travel, baby Nayiri and family were escorted by Miami Police and Paramedics to the hospital where they were assessed as healthy! Way to go Jackson Health and congrats on the arrival or your precious baby girl.
