In fact, this has been such a challenging issue throughout my own career that I've created the online CEU for nurses, Let’s Not Get Ahead of Ourselves | Preventing Misdiagnosis” where I’m sharing the skills, resources, and tips that I’ve learned over the span of my career.

About The Course: Description, Length, Takeaways

Let me tell you a short story - just recently, I was taking care of a patient who presented a certain way and I immediately thought, “Ah ha! I’ve seen this before, I know exactly what to do.” As a nurse of 23+ years, I've seen A LOT!

Turns out I was wrong. The patient's diagnosis changed as more tests came back. So, by getting ahead of myself in the beginning, I missed their most dire problem. I've created this course for nurses who, like me, have to work through a changing patient diagnosis.

In this 1 hour, 45-minute online Nursing CEU Course, we will explore cases retrospectively assessing opportunities to improve how we approach, provide and evaluate care. While clinical experience is important and helpful, it's critical that we keep an open mind, remains hypervigilant, continuously reassess and recognize that the way a patient presents is not always revealing their biggest problem. So, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Key Takeaways:

  • Discuss the importance of Mortality & Morbidity meetings
  • Explain the meaning of a medical error
  • Describe common sources of medical errors
  • Identify at least 3 clinical interventions that could have improved or changed the patient’s outcome
  • Identify at least 3 system and or process changes that could have prevented/improved the patient’s outcome

About Me:

Hi! I'm Alice Benjamin, MSN, APRN, ACNS-BC, FNP-C, CCRN, CEN, CV-BC, also known as Nurse Alice, a cardiac clinical nurse specialist and family nurse practitioner with over 23 years of nursing experience specializing in cardiology, critical care, and emergency medicine. Throughout the decades, I’ve worked at some of the world's most prestigious academic tertiary centers as well as some of the most underserved community hospitals taking care of some of the sickest patients on the planet.

Even with all my experience, degrees, and training, I admit, there are still times when I’m taking care of a patient and their diagnosis changes. In my early days as a nurse, I'd feel really overwhelmed. Nowadays, I have the skills and experience to help me work through it - and, I can't wait to be a mentor for you!
