Time Conversions & Military Time

Why This Matters for Nursing: Healthcare uses 24-hour (military) time to avoid AM/PM confusion. "Give medication at 0800" is clearer than "8:00" β€” no chance of mixing up morning and evening. Time math is also critical for calculating IV rates and medication schedules.

Military (24-Hour) Time

  • Uses 0000 to 2359
  • No AM/PM needed
  • Always 4 digits

🧠 Memory Trick

Converting Standard to Military: - AM hours: Just add a leading zero if needed (9:00 AM = 0900) - 12:00 PM (noon): = 1200 - PM hours (1-11): Add 12 (3:00 PM = 1500) - 12:00 AM (midnight): = 0000 (or 2400)

Converting Military to Standard: - 0001-1159: It's AM (drop leading zero) - 1200: It's 12:00 PM (noon) - 1300-2359: Subtract 12, it's PM

✏️ Worked Examples

Example 1: Standard to Military β€” AM

Problem: Convert 7:30 AM to military time.

Step 1 β€” AM hours are simple. For any AM time (except midnight), just keep the same hour number and write it with 4 digits (add a leading zero if needed). 7 becomes 07.

Step 2 β€” Write the minutes. :30 stays :30. Put them together: 0730.

Answer: 0730 (said aloud: "oh-seven-thirty")

Example 2: Step-by-Step Solution

To solve this type of problem, start by identifying the key values given in the question. Then apply the formula we covered above...

Step 1: Convert the mixed number to an improper fraction...

Step 2: Find the common denominator between the two fractions...
