Context Clues & Vocabulary

Why This Matters for Nursing: Medical terminology is full of unfamiliar words. You won't always have time to look up definitionsβ€”context clues help you understand terms quickly and keep up with fast-paced healthcare communication.

What You Need to Know

Context clues are hints in the surrounding text that help you figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

Types of Context Clues

Type How It Works Example
Definition Meaning directly stated "Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects millions."
Synonym Similar word nearby "The patient was lethargic and tired all day."
Antonym Opposite word nearby "Unlike her agitated roommate, she remained calm."
Example Examples illustrate meaning "Analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen reduce pain."
Explanation Sentence explains the word "She had tachycardia; her heart rate was over 100 bpm."
Inference Meaning implied by situation "After running, he was dyspneic and gasping for air."

🧠 Memory Trick

"SEAI" β€” Look for these clue types:

Synonym (similar word) Example (illustrations) Antonym (opposite) Inference (figure it out from context)

Also look for punctuation clues: - Commas, dashes, parentheses often set off definitions - "Or," "that is," "meaning" signal definitions

Finding Context Clues

Step-by-Step:

  1. Read the entire sentence (and sometimes surrounding sentences)
  2. Look for signal words: "or," "meaning," "such as," "unlike"
  3. Check punctuation: Definitions often appear after commas or in parentheses
  4. Look for examples: "Including" and "such as" introduce helpful examples
  5. Consider the overall meaning: What makes sense in this context?

✏️ Worked Examples

Example 1: Definition Clue

What we're looking for: The meaning of the unknown word β€” which has been helpfully defined right in the same sentence.

Sentence: "The doctor diagnosed bradycardia, a condition in which the heart beats fewer than 60 times per minute."

Step 1 β€” Spot the unfamiliar word. "Bradycardia" β€” medical term, probably unfamiliar if you haven't studied it.

Step 2 β€” Keep reading past the word without panicking. After "bradycardia" comes a comma, then: "a condition in which the heart beats fewer than 60 times per minute." That's a definition. The author put it right there.

Step 3 β€” Identify the clue type. The comma + "a condition in which..." is a classic definition clue. The author is defining the word immediately after using it.

Step 4 β€” Extract the meaning. "Fewer than 60 beats per minute" = slow heart rate.

Unknown word: Bradycardia β†’ Meaning: Slow heart rate (under 60 bpm)

Clue type: Definition β€” The meaning was stated directly after a comma.

Example 2: Step-by-Step Solution

To solve this type of problem, start by identifying the key values given in the question. Then apply the formula we covered above...
