Infer the meaning used here
A context question asks for the sense that fits this use, not the first dictionary meaning you remember. (1) Read the whole sentence or paragraph. (2) Identify definition, restatement, example, contrast, cause-and-effect, or tone clues. (3) Substitute the proposed meaning and confirm that it preserves both grammar and logic. Signal words such as unlike, although, and however often mark contrast, while for example introduces examples.
Worked example: βThe trail was usually accessible, but fallen trees made it impassable after the storm.β The contrast signals a change, and the trees block travel. Substituting impossible to travel through preserves the logic; βcrowdedβ fits the topic but not the evidence.
