Revise without changing meaning
Clarity depends on grammar and on an unmistakable relationship among ideas. First state the intended meaning; then choose the smallest revision that preserves it.
Place limiting modifiers such as only, almost, and nearly beside what they limit. βOnly Jamal reviewed the fileβ excludes other reviewers; βJamal reviewed only the fileβ excludes other things.
Repair ambiguity and faulty attachment
A pronoun must point clearly to one antecedent. In βWhen Maya called Tessa, she was studying,β she could name either person. Repeat the intended noun. Introductory modifiers should logically describe the following subject; otherwise rewrite the clause.
Worked revision: βAfter Sam emailed Lee, he updated the scheduleβ has two possible antecedents for he. If Lee made the update, revise to βAfter Sam emailed Lee, Lee updated the schedule.β Repeating the noun preserves the intended actor rather than asking the reader to guess.
Keep coordinate ideas parallel
Items serving the same grammatical role should use matching forms: βThe role requires planning, drafting, and revising.β Parallelism makes relationships visible. It does not require every word to match, only the coordinate structure.
Adjective order is mostly idiomatic; prioritize meaning and attachment over memorizing a long category list. Remove needless words only when the revision retains every necessary idea.
