It is not a diagnostic guide, a treatment guide, or a requirement to memorize an exhaustive specialty glossary. Start with Word Parts & Contextual Meaning if prefixes and suffixes are unfamiliar.
Use a small set of reliable parts
| Element | Meaning | Example meaning |
|---|---|---|
| cardi/o | heart | cardiology concerns study of the heart |
| dermat/o | skin | dermatology concerns study of skin |
| neur/o | nerve | neurology concerns the nervous system |
| gastr/o | stomach | gastritis means inflammation of the stomach |
| -itis | inflammation | dermatitis means skin inflammation |
| -ectomy | surgical removal | appendectomy means removal of the appendix |
| -logy | study of | biology is study of life |
| -scope | instrument for viewing | an endoscope is a viewing instrument |
A combining form such as cardi/o includes a root and a combining vowel. Words do not all divide into a prefix, root and suffix. The vowel may be omitted before another vowel, as in gastr + itis. Learn actual examples rather than treating one joining pattern as universal.
Worked example: separate structure from inference
Dermat/itis combines a skin-related root with inflammation. That supports βinflammation of the skin.β The parts alone do not specify cause, severity, contagiousness or treatment. Translating a word is not diagnosing a person.
