Why This Matters for Nursing: Good writing is a process, not a single step. Whether you're drafting discharge instructions for a patient or a formal report for a physician, knowing your audience and moving through clear stages — planning, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading — helps you communicate accurately and professionally.

What You Need to Know

Strong writing follows a process and is shaped by its audience and purpose.

The writing process (five stages):

1. Prewriting (planning) — generate and organize ideas (brainstorm, outline)
2. Drafting — write a first version, getting ideas down without worrying about perfection
3. Revising — improve content, organization, and clarity (add, cut, reorder ideas)
4. Editing — fix word choice, sentence structure, and grammar
5. Proofreading — catch final surface errors (spelling, punctuation, typos)

Rhetorical context — every piece of writing has three anchors:

• Audience — who will read it
• Purpose — why you're writing (to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe)
• Tone/register — how formal or informal the language is
