CRNA School Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0, but expect 3.5 to be considered competitive
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
  • All official transcripts
  • CV/Resume
  • Personal statement
  • Personal interview with the admissions team
  • CRNA shadow experience
  • GRE scores
  • Leadership experience
  • National specialty certification (ex. CCRN)
  • Official school/program application
  • Relevant ICU bedside experience
  • TOEFL scores, if applicable

Factors to Consider When Choosing a CRNA School

There are multiple factors to consider when choosing a CRNA school. These should all be considered before applying to a program.

Acceptance Rate

The CRNA program acceptance rate is the number of students that are accepted to a program for each cohort based on the number of applications received. Overall, CRNA program acceptance rates are less than 10%.

Students can take different approaches when it comes to looking at acceptance rates. If acceptance rates are low for a specific program, then it might be worth considering applying to other programs that fit your criteria.

CRNA programs are HIGHLY competitive so expect overall acceptance rates to be low. Most programs do advertise cohort size which may be helpful when applying.

Attrition Rate

The attrition rate refers to the number of students who leave a program over a specific period. This is from either leaving the program on their own or failing out. The attrition rate for CRNA programs should be low.

If a CRNA program has a high attrition rate of roughly 10%, then that could mean that programs are passing students who perhaps should not continue. This might not be the most important factor to consider when choosing a CRNA program, but nevertheless, it should be.

Program Cost

CRNA programs are expensive. Public school programs will cost significantly less than private school programs but regardless, expect to pay a minimum of $50,000 for an accredited program.

Accreditation

In order to take the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) examination to become a licensed CRNA, the CRNA program must be accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA).

While all factors are important to consider when choosing a CRNA program, accreditation is the most significant.

Exam Pass Rate

The exam pass rate for a program should ideally be 100%. This means that every CRNA graduate that takes the national certification exam passes on the first attempt.

This is not always the case, but the higher the percentage the better the program and the more likely it is to help students achieve success.

Selecting a CRNA school is a profoundly personal decision. Choosing a CRNA school near you or a hybrid online CRNA program will be ideal if you want to stay in your area. Conversely, you may seek out the cheapest CRNA schools if you have a strict budget.

Before making your decision, ask yourself these questions:

  • Can I afford my desired program? If not, do I qualify for scholarships, financial aid, or loans?
  • Am I willing to relocate for my desired program? If not, can I attend online?
  • Can I commit to a full-time academic schedule? If not, can I attend my desired program part-time?
  • Is the program accredited?
