Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

It's who you know

3
PROS:

You make good money as a bedside nurse. It's generally not as hectic as many bedside nursing jobs elsewhere in the big city. The benefits are one of kind. Health insurance plans are fairly good in comparison to the rest of the state nursing jobs. Easy to get 12 hr shifts at the bedside. The veterans are a unique population and usually are low maintenance. They learned being "tough" from their time in the service. The older the better! The only reason to stay other than a paycheck are the vets. For new nurses, you'll like the rotation of holidays/vaca weeks. Meaning seniority nurses can't compete with you for holidays and/or your guaranteed two weeks of vaca. You earn 8 hours of AL (requires management approval to use) and 4 hours of SL every two weeks (no approval necessary to use).

CONS:

Management gets away with bad decision making. It takes years to fire bad employees. Many nurses have terrible work ethics and are heavily protected my either bad managers or union. Earning a masters degree and working your way into administration isn't the way to advance. It's about who you know. Your experience, good attendance, great work ethics, certifications and degrees won't get you into administration. To advance anywhere in the VA, you have to make friends with your current manager or the one hiring. Expect everyone to participate in committees but do nothing to help you cover your patient workload while your off the unit. They don't care if you get breaks or lunches. The ICUs float frequently. Night shift nurses will float 1-2 xs per week when staffing is up. Extremely high turnover for med/surge nurses. They are not valued by management. In 10 years of being there I haven't seen any improvement in turnover rates. They have hiring freezes . Favoritism given by management destroys morale. It's not easy to get the five weeks of vacation you earn each year.

PACU (Post-Anasthesia, Recovery Room, PAR)

Two Stars

PROS:

None

CONS:

Think about it twice because listen to what they tell, it is most likely a lie. HR has no idea how to run an HR department They can't answer questions regarding your benefits. Tell you to go online.
