Neurology ICU (Neuro ICU)

Steer Clear of Neuro ICU

1
PROS:

None

CONS:

I was a traveler who came to Indiana University Methodist and this Neuro ICU unit in particular. My first impression on the unit was walking in bright eyed and bushy tailed, excited and ready to put my blessings to work when I was immediately arranged to speak with the Charge Nurse about the scheduling. Contract was for every third weekend and written in contract was for block scheduling. Charge RN informed me on first day that none of that would be happening as they don't do any of that for 'travelers'. There was a negative stigma with travelers for some apparent reason and she basically told me that no matter what was said in the interview or agreed upon and written into contract, it just wasn't going to be honored. I could have argued and instead, I kept quiet and received my schedule as she saw fit and decided to work what she gave me, even if it inconvenienced me. After going through orientation, I became aware that most of the nurses on the unit had the same mentality about travelers and were less than friendly. Anyone who knows me knows that I keep my head high and try not to worry about others opinions but instead I focus it on my patients and their families because that is who I really am there for right? Yes to fill unit holes and yada yada, but we are there to fill holes to care for patients and the families, so we are there for them and not really the hospital or the nurses there. With me doing so, my patients were absolutely the best people I could ask for, even the ones who gave the nurses a run for their money; however, it all comes down to treating the patients like human beings and loving them and caring for them. All of which things this unit severely lacks. There was a lot of fabricated stories for juicy drama, there was a lot of anger on this unit and a lack of integrity, honesty, or teamwork. This points to why they are severely understaffed and can't keep people even short term. I became more afraid when they were requiring me to do things that would absolutely put my license at jeopardy. That is when I had to politely draw the line. I smoothed over that they dishonored the contract the entire time, I smoothed over that I wouldn't get lunch breaks a lot until 3-4 pm when certain staffed worked, I smoothed over the negative aura on the unit, but I would not partake in anything that would put my licensure at risk and I finally spoke with my recruiter and went into everything that had been taking place and she actually didn't even want me to continue working there and removed me immediately from the unit even though I told her I would finish my contract. She was appalled and spoke to the hospital contact who was also appalled. This being said, I have met many wonderful nurses and doctors there at IU Methodist hospital along my journey and I have been convinced by their own staff that Neuro ICU has a huge negative reputation throughout the entire hospital and I could tell that not all units there were like this unit. If looking for a job or a traveler being placed, I would say steer clear of the Neuro ICU but this experience by no means accounts for the entire hospital or other nurses in other areas.
