Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

RN acute care/tele

PROS:

Co workers are friendly. Food is good if you have a chance to take a lunch. Benefits are good (you’ll need good health insurance), not a lot of nursing skills required (you won’t have time to use them)

CONS:

Staffing ratios shockingly unsafe at 7-8:1 (most pts are tele pts that the RN is responsible for monitoring), upper management is unrealistic.. we’re just a number.. good staff resign often in first 60 days of employment. Policy is for ED to send pts to room with only a printed generic “report”.. unsafe. Don’t Come Here

Telemetry

RN

PROS:

None

CONS:

Staffing ratio on SD/tele/MED surg is 7 patients to 1 RN. RN responsible for monitoring tele/alarms, etc.. there is no central monitoring. Unsafe staffing assignments. Often times 1 PCA for 15 patients.

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Don’t Come Here

PROS:

Coworkers are nice. Great older nurses. All younger nurses are smart enough to leave. Amazing benefits. Will need them for the amount of work you will do.

CONS:

8 to 1 ratio at times with 1 CNA that have 14 patients at times. Management says they can give you more and if you don’t like it you will be fired. Stressful work environment. Understaffed. Just a number to management.

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Patient ratios 7: 1 on med surg and cardiac floors

PROS:

The food in the cafetria is Good food in cafeteria This is a Travel friendly facility This is a Decent size facility The Staff here are friendly

CONS:

Pay is very low. Nurse patient ratios too high at 7:1. No holiday pay. Always understaffed .

Emergency Room (ER)

NOT TOO BAD

PROS:

WILLING TO LET YOU PICK YOUR SCHEDULE FOR THE WHOLE CONTRACT. MANAGERS ARE NICE AND HELPFUL. STAFF IS FRIENDLY. ABLE TO WORK OT OFTEN.

CONS:

PAY, MEDITECH, 5:1, COLLEGE TOWN, NOT MUCH TO DO.

Postpartum (Perinatal)

RN Well Baby Nursery and Pediatric units

PROS:

Co-workers are great! Scheduling flexibility is good. Location is very convenient.

CONS:

Floating to other units that are not maternal child related. The inconsistencies of nursing administration adds to already high stress levels.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Amazing

PROS:

Coworkers work as a team, environment where it is easy to make mistakes and learn, nurse patient ratio is adequate, scheduling is self-scheduling

CONS:

Management

Postpartum (Perinatal)

RN

PROS:

My coworkers are usually willing to swap days when needed off. Also health insurance for family covers well.

CONS:

Pay is not competitive with other hospitals in surrounding area. Also have to be pulled to other units too frequently.

Case Management (CM)

I have been with DCH for 21 years.

PROS:

Great peers to work with. The company has worked with me over the years to adjust my schedule many times to meet the needs of my family.

CONS:

pay is not as high as other hospitals

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Overall it was a good experience,

PROS:

Coworkers were very friendly and they are accustomed to travelers working at DCH. They were helpful with any questions.

CONS:

Every hospital has it's own issues. The only problem that I encountered was that they pulled the travelers to other units first and they may get pulled twice in one shift.
