Emergency Room (ER)

Awful

1
PROS:

I told them my pregnancy was High Risk. That I have a high chance for Pre-eclampsia because I have Gestational Hypertension. There was no rush to get me to the OBGYN or an actual DR. I was cramping, dizzy, had tunnel vision, felt like I was going to faint, had a slight head ache and shortness of breathe. Symptoms of Pre-eclampsia. This hospital is a complete joke.... they took my BP that’s it, not my temperature or heart rate. They didn’t ask if I had taken any meds or nothing just if I was a smoker. Not once did any of the people who walked in my room introduced themselves so. I’m just gonna guess most of them were nurses. They tried to give me a cat scan because I was dizzy. I said. I’m not going to put my kid through any amount of radiation just because I’m dizzy, u guys haven’t even told me what the results were of my blood and urine. And it’s not like I fell and hit my head. Oh the best part was when the nurse tried to run an IV and my blood continually ran down my arm because ‘something was wrong with the twisty thing at the base of the needle.’ I almost passed out multiple times. Almost threw up. There was blood all over the floor, Oh and Idk if I actually got any fluids because IV fluid was also running down my arm....... also right before that my left hand started feeling tingly and went numb all the way up to my elbow......and I started freaking out and crying. I spent 4 1/2 hours in the ER part of the hospital not once talked to OB except the last 30 min of being there because they finally sent me to labor & delivery for a stress test. Which they could’ve done the blood and urine test there. They should’ve sent me there first thing. Oh and I don’t actually know what was going on. No one told me. No dr actually walked in and said why I was having these symptoms. The nurse just said, make sure u drink a bunch of water and that I should’ve went to UAB because that’s where my OBGYN was. I was like. I had tunnel vision and My husband was an hour away. U really think I should drive 35 min to a hospital in the city???? Oh and my room was the casting room. Lol so I had absolutely no privacy. There were no curtains I could pull. And right across my bed was the supply room with needles and stuff like that so there were people constantly filtering in the room. Worst fucking hospital I’ve ever seen in my life.

CONS:

There are no pros. Don’t go here...

Excellent

PROS:

The schedule I worked, my coworkers were team players, the facility was clean, the management was attentive to the staff needs.

CONS:

Some days during shift report the assignment would change suddenly-causing a bit of confusion--sometimes even a change of unit working on happening suddenly.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Intensive care nurse

3
PROS:

The facility has nurses that work together and it's like a family. The facility is also small enough to get comfortable in knowing where everything is located.

CONS:

Nurse to patient ratio was hard to maintain as turnover for patients was so quick. Going through up to 3 critical patients in one shift is difficult. These patients require extensive prep to get the patients stable and it's very difficult to juggle three patients back to back to back.

Emergency Room (ER)

Working in a smaller hospital gives many opportunities for learning

4
PROS:

coworkers become a great team related to being a smaller hospital/unit, increased teamwork, flexible working hours, easy charting system, good manager

No overtime, often understaffed, no extra holiday pay, old equipment, slow working vital sign machines, not enough PCTs
