Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Amazing! I love coming to work!

PROS:

Co-workers have your back, very diverse, so many opportunities to move up and continue to grow, you will definitely get enough hours

CONS:

Sometimes the staff to patient ratio isnt ideal on night shift at least but the other co-workers step up and help, also there is a 5-2 spliton most floors meaning you will work 5 days in a row and then be off 2 and then work 2 then be off 5 or work 5 be off 5 then work 2 and be off 2

Operating Room (OR)

Peri operative RN

PROS:

Excellent doctors and coworkers. Doctors very approachable and easy to communicate with. Feel like your part of a team as Dr listen to the nurses. Well staffed. Very good working atmosphere.

CONS:

Pay not as good as area hospitals. East Tennessee is low pay area with many rural, "country folk". Benefits could be better.

Postpartum (Perinatal)

Have experience ce in med surg psych and postpartum.

PROS:

Enjoyed. Working with my coworkers and patients. I am retiring from the state of Tennessee after 20 years of employment. Since my husband and I will now both be retired. Would love to travel and see the country.

CONS:

Do not wish to work weekends. Have worked weekends for past 20 years. Have three beautiful granddaugjters that I wish to be able to spend more time with.

Progressive Care

Orthopedic and Neuro Trauma Step Down Unit

PROS:

I recommend a short stent, not a long placement. You get lots of experience and get a little bit of everything. You get to see lots of cool things. There are many opportunities for advanced education and certification. They pay for graduate school at UT without having to sign an extended contract.

CONS:

Coworkers were "okay." Definitely underpaid. There were times you definitely just felt like a number. You always had 6 patients and sometimes on night shift you had 8 if staffing was down (on a PCU floor). The work is very physically demanding and stressful with the particular patient population I worked with. Days off were few and far between. Poor benefits.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Staff RN

PROS:

Medical Critical Care unit had great leadership as far as team leaders: charge nurses on night shift, Great staff, great teamwork where everyone is always willing to jump in and help, teaching facility, residents/ fellows/ attending a extremely knowledgeable, magnet status hospital.

CONS:

Medical Critical scare has Poor management, hospital has lowest pay in the area, nurses are overworked and underplayed, unit is 95% of the time understaffed which makes it impossible to really get to know your critical patients.

Neonatal ICU (NICU)

I had a great experience working here

PROS:

coworkers, facility, teach hospital, pay. I was very happy with my experience here. Many seasoned nurses work with loads of wisdom who helped train me.

CONS:

None

Orthopedics

Working with Orthotrauma patients

PROS:

Pay is good for new graduates but nurse or ratio is horrible on night shift due to shortage of nurses.

CONS:

Lots of negative coworkers and bad attitudes and managers.

Emergency Room (ER)

ok

PROS:

coworkers and how they do the scheduling-the ability for education classes to further knowlede and have a great gym also mountains are close

CONS:

pay

PACU (Post-Anasthesia, Recovery Room, PAR)

Staff RN

PROS:

Co-workers, facility, opportunities for new experiences, magnet status, evidence-based practice nursing care, shared governance, learning hospital, excellence in care, experienced staff

CONS:

Pay, scheduling, ratios, parking

Step-down

C.N.A.

PROS:

Great support, caring, Work with you on scheduling ,even work around your school schedule Patient ratio is the best.Good training programs..the pay depends on experience..very nice facility..

CONS:

you are assigned a parking lot to park your car in it a good walk to the building, so you will get your daily exercise..A safe ,secure lot you have to have your clearence badge to get in
