Ambulatory Care

My experience

PROS:

Worked on a patient floor as a bedside nurse and transferred to another department. In the time I was on the floor, there was almost a complete turnover of the nursing staff. Management really concerned about patient satisfaction survey and always trying to increase it. Lowering how many patients each nurse has would increase satisfaction but upper management absolutely under no condition will not do that. They just keep coming up with ideas that take extra time away from direct patient care. That leaves them with chronic understaffed nursing staff and lots of turnover. They say its so expensive to train people but I don’t think its true because they will not change how many patients on a team. 6! It doesn’t make any sense. The hospital trains all these nurses that quit anywheres from 3 months to a year and they go out to jobs in the community. Really hard to make 6 patients happy and chart and keep up with all the extra stuff like email and online training. The patients that seemed the most satisfied with my care were the ones who needed the most care and were really sick. The way the system is you cant take really good care of those people, do all the things they want to increase patient satisfaction, chart, do extra training and leave on time.

CONS:

They hire good people but morale is low. Besides being understaffed, HR policies have changed in the last few years. They’ve become much more strict about reasons they can write you up. I seen lots of people written up in the last 6 months. That makes morale low to. Working there you get a lot of training and stay up on the latest treatments, equipment, and gov regs, but a lot of it is online and its hard to get all that training done while you’re at work and by the deadline date of the training. We don’t get low census very much so nurses get their hours in. At this time of year, they expect for you to work a extra shift either x 1 per month or pay period. Depends on your unit but its mandatory. Working 4 12 hour days makes mot of us so tired. Pay is good but you def earn it.
