Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Patient ratio too high

PROS:

Louisville is a beautiful city. Downtown location is central to anywhere you want to live and play.

CONS:

Co-workers are overworked, low moral, pay too low, ratio too high. Acuity is always high, patient assignments are always lopsided and low acuity is always skewed to the favorites.

Emergency Room (ER)

Registered nurse in certified stroke, trauma, and burn center.

PROS:

coworkers create environment of teamwork that remains strong despite work conditions. self-scheduling and set weekend schedule with flexibility to switch. experience in adult trauma in teaching hospital. collaboration between multiple specialties

CONS:

ratio is 1:4, and can be any acuity. high turnover due to nature of teaching facility and patient population - high acuity trauma, dealing with death in trauma, population of low education, mental disability and drug/ETOH patients with repeat visits, etc.

Emergency Room (ER)

Personal

PROS:

Great experience as a nurse. Get to learn and grow tremendously as a nurse. Pay is good and to grow as a nurse, this is the place you need to be.

CONS:

None

Oncology

Nurses treated poorly

PROS:

Interesting environment and lots of cute doctors. Teaching environment so you will definitely learn a lot.

CONS:

Pay is awful, weekend schedule sucks, staffing is crap. Higher ups don't care about the nurses at all. Managers are never available, it's unsafe half the time.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Its alright

PROS:

Excellent education opportunities. A place for learning and perfecting new skills. Lots of available overtime and a variety of unit specialties.

CONS:

Bullying

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Level 1 trauma

PROS:

Level 1 trauma good rapor with doctors great autonomy great opportunities to learn it's challenging and very rewarding

CONS:

Staffing nurse to patient ratio to many new inexperienced RNs at a level 1 trauma being sent to step down floors when your ICU float pool

Operating Room (OR)

O.R. staff nurse

PROS:

Had a great experience. O.R. staff is very traveler friendly. Level 1 trauma, oncology, robotics, a little something for everyone.

CONS:

Only con I can come up with is that they have break-ins in the employee parking from time to time.

Operating Room (OR)

Surgical technologist

PROS:

Great place to work, good co workers. Lower level of call per schedule. Well seasoned co workers to help the inexperienced in trauma

CONS:

Lower pay, level 1 trauma- burn out. Can be difficult to see the high level of domestic violence, MVA type of trauma.

Emergency Room (ER)

ER RN

PROS:

Co-workers, shift flexibility and opportunity for OT, lots of autonomy for nurses, great working relationships with residents and interns

CONS:

Pay, conflicts between MS floor and ER on moving patients, not enough techs, more autonomy for techs, renovation needed for ER

Oncology

Pleasant environment , supportive staff

PROS:

None

CONS:

Unable to get set schedule, and they are in a transition phase so it was difficult to find supplies when pulled to other units. Staff was helpful and minimized this inconvenience somewhat.
