Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

RN

PROS:

Coworkers and some very good doctors

CONS:

This hospital does not pay its nurses well. Insurance packages are expensive and don't cover much. Doctors get everything they ask for however nurses get told we can't afford to give you that. Pediatric unit is depressing and needs to be remodeled. Cafeteria food is not good and the hours of operation are a joke, patients complain about this daily. Out dated equipment. You have to run all over to get what you need for your patients wasting valuable time and energy. Linens, syringes, cotton balls, bandaids, the simplest things that nurses use frequently are not stocked in patient rooms. If you can believe it they don't have computers in the patients rooms! RNs are run ragged and it's not unusual to be forced to stay and work a 16 hour shift.

Rehabilitation

Great learning experience.

PROS:

Great team work among co-workers, lots of experience. Longevity of nursing staff. Mission, and values are displayed well within the organization.

CONS:

None

Labor & Delivery (L&D)

Hospital doesn't care about its nurses.

PROS:

Coworkers

CONS:

Very low pay; HORRIBLE treatment of nurses by anesthesiologists; terrible and expensive insurance; no bonuses; tiny raises that don't even cover cost of living increases and then they increase your insurance so you are even farther behind; ridiculous expectations of you; upper management (CEO, etc) completely out of touch with reality due to massive salaries and bonuses (I'd love to switch them jobs for a year, of course I'd have made enough money to retire after that year); they make promises and don't keep them, like yes we will offer you a weekend package for x-dollars a hour and have the employees start working the weekend package but after months never paid them the agreed upon wages and then said they weren't going to do it or this one...we will close your unit so you don't have to float if you get your Illinois license so you can help in our Illinois hospital if needed. So we all get our Illinois licenses (which was expensive and time consuming) and then they open the unit up again and now we have a lot of extra expense and time commitment on our part (due to keeping an extra license)and we never use the Illinois license; most of the hospital is very outdated, the new tower is nice but has some major issues; parking is a joke even patients complain about the parking situation. After 12 years working here my benefits only gone down hill and perks are now nonexistent. To reward us for our hard work they find something else to take away from us or add to our list of requirements that we must do to keep our jobs. I could go on but I think that gives you a good idea.

Telemetry

Long hours, poor staffing

PROS:

Coworkers are amazing. The long hours are made up by having coworkers that are simply phenomenal. My coworkers always helped make any bad situation bearable.

CONS:

Pay, scheduling. staffing ratios.

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

New grad

PROS:

Pay is good for nights and weekends. ICU paysc quite a bit more. 30 days training is ample time to learn.

CONS:

Staffing

Oncology

Four Stars

PROS:

Be sure to ask for a tour and possible job shodow on the unit you are interested in working in to see how the staff interacts with each other. I work in radiation oncology total staff in my department is less than 30. Each area within my department has very unique duties which others can not do so we work really well supporting each other. As nurses we have a lot of otonomy given to us by the doctors. Using nursing judgement when providing care is very rewarding.

CONS:

None

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Five Stars

PROS:

You won't get raises.

CONS:

None

Emergency Room (ER)

Three Stars

PROS:

Not very supportive of nursing staff pay very low compared to other hospitals in area

CONS:

None

Telemetry

Four Stars

PROS:

Older nurses who make more money are sometimes replaced by lesser paid ancillary staff and new graduate RNs

CONS:

None

Endoscopy (GI, Gastroenterology)

Four Stars

PROS:

We are a very specialized unit, working with maney different docotors and various other deparments

CONS:

None
