Emergency Room (ER)

all the excitement you see on TV

4
PROS:

It's the level 1 trauma center, the stroke center, the cardiac cath center, and the highest level of care for about a 58 mile radius. They invest in educating you and growing you to the highest skill level. You are never bored and you are challenged every day.

CONS:

Being the highest level of care, they can never go on bypass and frequently become hopelessly deadlocked. The pace is back-breaking from the moment you clock in until you clock out. You must be in good physical shape to keep up in here.

Neurology

I was a pct at this hospital the workloads are easy

3
PROS:

Pay is good, the people you work with all work together, where I worked we made our schedule each week.

CONS:

The con was when you need time off and not for just being sick and your child was having surgery in their hospital they wanted me to run back and forth from my daughter to my floor to keep working and not stay home with her the day after. And forced me to resign or I’d be fired.

Cardiothoracic Registered Nurse

PROS:

Staffing is usually really good. My unit is 4-1, max 5-1 which is rare. Day shift RNs usually have students as well so you have a buddy all day. Management is awesome and the hospital treats us well.

CONS:

As the biggest unit in the hospital, we have a high turnover rate. We go through a lot of new grads but there are also a lot of core nurses who never leave too.
