Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Great hospital

PROS:

Truly the "forefront of medicine," lots of fascinating patients, passionate nurses, great pay, tuition reimbursement is incredible, continuing education, CCD& Comer is beautiful and has fantastic equipment, good nurse to patient ratio, magnet, level 1 trauma

CONS:

Mitchell hospital is very outdated, some managers less than ideal, such a huge hospital and lots of complexity with managing patients within a huge healthcare organization

Labor & Delivery (L&D)

Staff

PROS:

Pay.. the pay is good ...,but, you will definitely work for it . Most of the nurses there are a good crew tibwork with.

CONS:

Management has allowed unsafe practice without investigating. They have seriously broken the morale of the nurses on the unit.

Case Management (CM)

Terrible and unsafe

PROS:

It is one of the highest paying facilities but you earn every penny of that pay. Tuition reimbursement would be nice if you weren't too exhausted at the end of the day to go back to school.

CONS:

Very understaffed and you are putting your license at risk by working there. CMs covering multiple units and working 10+ hours a day.

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Great teamwork

PROS:

The staff nurses are very knowledgeable and helpful. Charting system is up to date and very manageable. Management is always available for needs.

CONS:

The facility is understaffed and unfortunately not organized. The set up of the floors prohibits a steady workflow. Supply rooms are never fully stocked.

Pediatric

Great

PROS:

I enjoyed working at the University of Chicago Medical Center - Comer Children's Hospital because of the great coworkers, pay, location, atmosphere, magnet journey, continuing education, community involvement

CONS:

Working in a large teaching medical facility you work with residents and interns, you often have nursing students following you, budget always seems tight, general management could be better

Endoscopy (GI, Gastroenterology)

Endoscopy

PROS:

Good group of coworkers. Initially work schedule was not flexible Located in the downtown area

CONS:

Expected to work alone in the rooms and in recovery room Facility was not well lighted Have to pay for parking Some staff were not friendly

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Staff nurse

PROS:

Pay & support is great, two raises a year and 100% tuition reimbursement for master's. I love this hospital, and I feel very appreciated and taken care of in my practice.

CONS:

None

Urology
