Great experience

PROS:

Teamwork was very strong and there was always safe staffing. Flexible schedule with many opportunities to pick up extra shifts

CONS:

PROS:

Great teaching facility, diverse patient groups, good staff relations. Access to learning and advancement in career. Computer charting real time monitoring.

CONS:

Fast pace, need to be able to think quickly and adapt, and have good communicating skills.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

RESPONSIBLE FOR RENDERING PROFESSIONAL NURSING CARE TO PATIENTS

PROS:

PERFORMS A VARIETY OF SUPPORTIVE AND TECHNICAL NURSING SKILLS AND UTILIZE A RANGE OF EQUIPMENT WHEN CARRYING OUT SPECIFIC MEDICAL AND NURSING PERFORMANCE OF SPECIFIC TREATMENTS, MONITORING TECHNIQUES AND OTHER DIAGNOSTIC, THERAPEUTIC AND SUPPORTIVE MEASURES. DIVERSITY IN CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION DEFINITELY AN ASSET,

CONS:

WORK OVERLOAD THAT DOESNT COMPENSATE IN SALARY

Oncology

understaffed

ratio days 3-4, nights 4-5, overtime opportunities on floor and in the onc clinic, night shift differential is worth working nights.

PROS:

Coworkers, fair scheduling, great orientation, safe staffing, mentor and team leader RNs always available (without patients) to help

CONS:

Pay for parking ($8 at night or $12 during the day); I do not have anything else bad to say

Operating Room (OR)

Surgical Nurse

PROS:

Location is awesome! A lot of great places to shop! Great places to eat and Taste of Chicago is coming soon!

CONS:

Parking is expensive! I commute by train.

Neurology ICU (Neuro ICU)

RN

PROS:

Coworkers and general staff: everyone wants to be there and no one gives half effort care, facility, support, patient population, benefits, location,

CONS:

Pay is lower compared to other hospitals Scheduling: work 6 weekend shifts in a 6 week period

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

#1 in Illinois

PROS:

Great facility, wonderful nursing care, education hospital, wonderful location in heart of Chicago, very skilled physicians, high likelihood to recommend scores

CONS:

Lower paying in city

Neuroscience (Neurological, Neurology)

Overworked, poor management

PROS:

Great coworkers

CONS:

Poor staffing, no ancillary help at night, very stressful atmosphere without management support or concern , very high turnover, priority of patient care is geared to the rich and/ or famous who may be donors

Labor & Delivery (L&D)

RN, Team Leader

PROS:

Co-workers are young, fun, facility is newly renovated, very fast-paced department delivering 13,000 +/- babies per year

CONS:

Expensive city to live in, parking costs employees quite a lot. A lot of employee turnover so many times nurses are inexperienced.
