Oncology

RN OCN, BSN

PROS:

The best unit to work on. Never in 7 years have I ever worked with 1:12 ratio's. Actually there are only 21 beds on this unit so that ratio doesn't even make sense. The managers listen to there staff and respond quickly to your concerns. If an isolation issue arises we have an amazing Infection Prevention team they help get us our answers even in the middle of the night. VHC is the best!

CONS:

Expansion of Vacation time for staff, Increase company 401k match from 6% to 8%

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Med Surge RN

PROS:

Great teamwork! Staffing has really improved over the past few months, we can all see a difference of having a charge nurse out of staffing and manageable ratios of 1:4 or 1:5. LOVE the culture of this hospital, I never want to leave, everyone is so nice.

CONS:

Computer system very slow, scheduled to go-live with EPIC later this year. Everyone excited to see a change.

Oncology

RN Oncology/Med Surg

PROS:

None to be honest. There are too many other hospital options in this region.

CONS:

Staffing ratios are unmanageable and supervisor was condescending when discussion about safety of patients was brought to attention. Ratios at night were often 12:1 when nurses called off! Unacceptable when patients are receiving chemotherapy (any care actually!). HCAPS were made priority over staffing. Sad because it's the patient who suffers. No worth losing a patient or a nursing license. Additionally, you park offsite and shuttle to the facility.

Psychiatric (Mental Health)

Awesome

PROS:

Very friendly and Accomodating. Travel staff treated fairly and impartially. Nurse/ Patient Ratio was reasonable. Nurse Manager very flexible with schedule

CONS:

Computer clocking can be inconvenient when already in use by one of the staff Holiday scheduling seemingly challenging but manageable.

Operating Room (OR)

Great experience

PROS:

Coworkers were easy to get along with. Communication was easy when there were any questions or concerns. Great support from peers.

CONS:

None

Case Management (CM)

Great hospital

PROS:

The patient is put first. Good collaboration between disciplines. Staffing is good and managers are available to help assure that patient care is evident.

CONS:

None

Oncology

Five Stars

PROS:

Not enough staffing on the unit which leads to 5-7 high acuity patients per nurse. This is not safe for the RN or the patient and does not allow me to be the nurse I want to be. Administrators want to increase HCAP scores and want patients to have a superior experience during their stay. This is very difficult when each nurse is challenged with time, tasks, and demands. The business model is flawed. Feed the engine: provide more staffing per unit, provide a better system for assigning patient acuity , provide a more favorable patient to nurse ratio and outcomes will soar as well as nurses spirits.

CONS:

None

Postpartum (Perinatal)

Five Stars

PROS:

The staff really makes this job worth it.

CONS:

None

Neonatal ICU (NICU)

PROS:

It's a great hospital with excellent benefits!

CONS:

None

Postpartum (Perinatal)

Three Stars

CONS:

None
