Neuroscience (Neurological, Neurology)

Registered Nurse

PROS:

Variety of patients, interesting cases, good learning experiences. You see patients here that you won't see at other, smaller hospitals d/t the fact that it is a level 1 trauma center.

CONS:

Poor staffing, MedStar as a corporation makes poor financial decisions, holiday scheduling is not ideal.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Gained more knowledge & experinence, it enables me utilize it in my practice.

PROS:

Very good learning environment, pay scale is good, patient nurse ratio is 1:1 critical patients and 1:2 non critical patients. Coworkers are very professional, helpful and work as a team.

CONS:

Scheduling is somewhat a hassle.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

UR Nurse

PROS:

Coworkers were fun to work with

CONS:

Managers were never on the same page, inconsistency, poor work environment, travelers were made to feel like they were not part of the team.

Operating Room (OR)

Rn

PROS:

Coworkers, pay , scheduling, metal, and physical draining, schedule to straining, management unorganized, understaffed, high turn over rated for nurses.

CONS:

None.

Wound Care (WOC, Wound Ostomy Continence)

Wocn

PROS:

Acuity of patients co workers. I learn something new everyday. The pay scale is high. We are very independent.

CONS:

Commute, this is a very large hospital and at times this can be difficult. We do not have a wocn as a director. For some in our department, there is no accountability.

Neuroscience (Neurological, Neurology)

RN

PROS:

Coworkers

CONS:

The facility is in bad condition. Travel nurses are floated to other units frequently and often in the middle of your shift. You may work 0700-1500 in one unit then have to give report in the unit you are leaving only to go pick up a full load of new patients from 1500 to 1900 in another unit. I would not go back on a travel contract there again.

PACU (Post-Anasthesia, Recovery Room, PAR)

Great

PROS:

Conveniently located close to metro station and metro buses route. Located close to two university, day care and restaurants, lounge, shopping and down town Washington DC.

CONS:

It is located in middle of city which makes it inconvenient to drive because of extreme traffic during rush hour. Have to pay for parking.

Emergency Room (ER)

Outstanding quality of care

PROS:

Team work with the nursing staff and MD. Great place to work if you enjoy a busy fast pace high acuity ED.

CONS:

None

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Lead, resource nurse, preceptor and experience with various invasive devices.

PROS:

Allows self scheduling, has good coworkers, good Tution incentive and enables nurse to gain good work experience. Very poor salary increment.

CONS:

None

Electrophysiology (EP)

Work hard

PROS:

Pay to park, Pack lunch as cafeteria long lines, not so much good but the money, not interested to return

CONS:

Fight for breaks, Philippine nurses talk in native language in front of you and patients, rush and see lots of mistakes
