Ambulatory Care

Good team

PROS:

Pay was good here, had a little scheduling snafu initially, but resolved. Team was pretty solid. Had to look for accommodations on my own and ended up staying at Stucco Lodge (recommend). Overall, good experience.

CONS:

Scheduling issues originally, but resolved

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Merritt 3 Surgical, 2+ years

PROS:

Lots of different patients with many learning opportunities. Flexible scheduling is great. Night shift coworkers very helpful. Will hire new grads. Pay very well! Cerner Powerchart documentation system is easy to understand and work with. 12 hour shifts. Benefits are fine. Many new construction updates, brand new cafeteria. Providers friendly & helpful. Read your own Tele strips with techs watching monitors for events at all times.

CONS:

Not enough equipment, equipment will break and never be fixed, including vital sign machines, glucometers, computers on wheels, etc. Patient ratios are not good, 6 patients is standard on night shift, there have been times where we have had to take 7! Very short-staffed always. Frequently assignments without CNAs and you must provide total care for those patients. Assignments frequently not based on acuity of patients. Patient population is primarily Caucasian, so you don't get to experience the health / assessment variations of other races. Housekeeping won't clean up poop off the floor, it's the nurses job. Contact precautions for anyone with a history of MRSA or VRE, doesn't even have to be active. Medications frequently not available on the floor, pharmacy very slow to deliver medications. Many supplies frequently on backorder. Forcing people to become charge nurse after less than 2 years experience on the floor because there aren't any other people left to do the job.

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Pay is great but not at the cost of patient safety

PROS:

Pay, Many friendly, supportive team oriented front line staff doing the best they can to support each other in the midst of a chaotic environment.

CONS:

High acuity patients with unsafe patient ratios, inadequate number nursing techs. esp. on nights. Inexperienced newer staff do not receive adequate orientation and are left to fend for themselves before being adequately trained. High stress, negative environment fueled by unsupportive, and punitive supervisor/management teams.

Emergency Room (ER)

Student

PROS:

Nice equipment, some people are welcoming, looks great on a resume, Bangor has great night life and diversity of businesses.

CONS:

Not a very welcoming atmosphere, patient care is questionable

Ambulatory Care

...

PROS:

Very nice, welcoming staff. New Pavillion with state of the art technology. Area is close to Acadia National Park.

CONS:

A lot of new nurses including charge nurses, feels like the blind leading the blind a lot of times. Building under going construction, including cafeteria.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

PROFESSIONAL WORK PLACE

PROS:

PAY, co workers, scheduling, patient care of the parts that are going really well and haven't had any issues with the highest quality of care

CONS:

None

Telemetry

Night RN on the telemetry unit. PP6

PROS:

Coworkers were great and the manager on the floor was as well. Easy to pick up extra time. Not many CNAs are hired so the ratios can get poor, but not that often on nights.

CONS:

Other floors ratios are very poor

Psychiatric (Mental Health)

LPN-working float on all units, passing meds/treatments.

PROS:

Good people to work with and additional learning skills given. Money and benefits were good. Safety aspects were very good.

CONS:

Sometimes several mandatory hours were needed. This put a lot of extra stress on the healthcare team while working a lot of over time

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Great place to work

PROS:

there are great nurses who work here with some great experiences. Excellent teamwork and flexible schedule. It's a teaching hospital so there is always something new to learn

CONS:

Patient to nurse ratio

Other

Three Stars

PROS:

Very political

CONS:

None
