Operating Room (OR)

Presurgical testing

4
PROS:

Coworkers, facility, benefits, location, variety of opportunities, hours, education , pay, stability, advancement opportunities, located in advancing city with beautiful surroundings

CONS:

Ratio, hospital politics,

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Great for a new graduate nurse!

4
PROS:

Opportunities for younger nurses to get into a speciality, it is a teaching hospital so everyone is eager to educate, very friendly environment

CONS:

Staffing/scheduling was very difficult

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Pay is embarrassing. CEO doesn't care about RN rentention

1
PROS:

Newer areas of facility, research with Virginia tech institute, students, nice people overall but they are all super stressed.

CONS:

Pay starts about 22 for a new grad. Nights $3/hr. Weekends $4/hr. It's $4/hour for weekend nights. Terrible raises as I saw mentioned. Can't keep RN's. They don't let the RNs self schedule. Most units (not all... The OR is awesome and peds does every 3rd weekend) . They make you work every other weekend and take call and the nurse to pt ratios often are poor. We are leaving and moving to Richmond if they don't change FAST .

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Terrible pay

1
PROS:

Good teaching hospital. You get a good variety of patients. Awesome NICU but they can be cliqueish. Adult icus are great. Med surg and pcus are super short staffed alllll the time. You don't get breaks and have too many patients. Charges take patients even in ICU at times. Resource pool offers and extra $2.00 per hour for working in that unit on top of base plus shift diff. Parking is great. Food is so so. Nice people.

CONS:

Pay is horrible. The night shift diff is $3 an hour. Overtime starts after 40hrs not 36. Weekend shift diff is $4/an hour. You do not get the 4 plus 3 if you work weekend nights! They gave RN's a flat raise of 2% for this yr. bc or staffing, they offer ESI extra shift incentive and its a joke. You get $4 per hour extra day shift and $8 night for picking up extra bc of short staffing. Horrible pay. No child care options. They say honey tree but the hours don't even stay open long enough for day shift RN! Lots of call bc of short staffing.

Oncology

Very caring and excellent nursing staff.

5
PROS:

Coworkers very team oriented, friendly and supportive of each other. Managers are not only patient oriented but staff oriented as well.

CONS:

Parking during the day is difficult. The hospital is confusing on where other services are located. Cafeteria very crowded at lunch time.

Endoscopy (GI, Gastroenterology)

RN Endoscopy

5
PROS:

Coworkers are amazing and very helpful with feeling comfortable in a new facility, always eager to help or show helpful things

CONS:

Call team overworked

Step-down

A wonderful place to start my career

4
PROS:

Coworkers and flexible schedule There is a large percentage of new graduate but there are many resources to ensure a safe environment.

CONS:

Pay

Neonatal ICU (NICU)

NICU RN

3
PROS:

Level III NICU sees everything except Ecmo so we care for the barely viable to the feeder growers. Wide range of acuities.

CONS:

Pay does not justify what many nurses spend on education, especially if you have a lot of student loan debt.

Psychiatric (Mental Health)

Psychiatric Nurse

4
PROS:

Pay awhile not the highest is still competitive. The outsole and management I've dealt with have been great. There is self scheduling as well.

CONS:

It is a large corporation with all its attending bureaucracy.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Rn

4
PROS:

Good company, educates staff routinely, up to date equipment, teaching hospital

CONS:

Pay is not competitve because they are the monopoly in healthcare in this region. Only one other hospital to work for.
