PACU (Post-Anasthesia, Recovery Room, PAR)

Great experience

4
PROS:

Coworkers are nice, hospital is clean and in a good area! Would recommend to anyone. Surgical area is all new and neatly organized.

CONS:

Pay not super

Long-Term Care (LTC)

Bully Management

1
PROS:

Excellent co-workers and patients. Small town Atmosphere.

CONS:

Management is a mix of women that take pride in bullying anyone who has concern about the understaffing problem. No breaks and rarely a lunch. Lots of worker injury and patient falls. Co-workers are unhappy and don't stay long. The turn over rate is very high. I believe Denali Center could be a great place to work if they get new management. This place is costing the company a lot of money.

Operating Room (OR)

Dreams to nightmares

2
PROS:

Nice place to live. Met some great co-workers. 1/2 off food in cafeteria for employees.

CONS:

No pay raises, management is unwilling to listen to staff concerns. High turnover in multiple areas. Promotions given to those that don't care about the good of the hospital as a whole but are happy for the title and a fat pocket. Orientation is a joke and a wast of company money. Too many travelers.

Infection Control (Infection Prevention, ICN)

Five Stars

PROS:

Small Community Feel, friendly staff who welcome travelers as their own and don't shun them. Magnet status is pending. However, there is a change of management starting with the new year, which has some current staff concerned for their benefits and how changes will affect patient care.

CONS:

None

Ambulatory Care

PROS:

I can only speak regarding the surgical area but as a traveler what I was told during my interview and what it was like once I arrived were two different things. Management views travelers as being owned and worked as much as possible. Even if your contract states a certain amount of weekends and call shifts per assignment, they disregard and do with you as they will. Overall the facility is welcoming and the there are wonderful staff on the unit, but the management culture towards travelers is not friendly or ethical in the honoring of contracts. If many of us would of known this was the culture, we would not have agreed to come to this facility. The area is beautiful and the town is a lot of fun in the summer.

PROS:

CONS:

Think very carefully before working in the surgical department here. The management team will start off very positive but once you are here, it is bait and switch with contracted work hours and call scheduling. They completely ignore your contract and put you on ridiculous amounts of back to back shifts with full weekend call then back to back shifts on the front end of the week. Call is code for additional work shifts. Expect to work your full call shift, it is very rare to not get called in at all. A fellow OR traveler RN who works for an other agency got called in 4x in 1 12hour call shift so be prepared. The money can be good but the politics and bad attitude towards traveler RNs from management that they own you is unacceptable. Endo is great so if you stay there, you'll be safe and have a wonderful experience.

Nurse Manager/Supervisor/Director

Three Stars

PROS:

Alaska has a limited resource available for nursing and therefore departments often work with tight staffing. The community spirit is strong and very supportive of new people to the area as well as to the hospital.

CONS:

None

Behavioral health

PROS:

Great environment

CONS:

None

labor and delivery

Avoid at all cost

PROS:

None

CONS:

This unit is notoriously catty and if the clique doesn't like you, they are quick to find fault and run to their nurse manager (I use the term loosely)in an attempt to remove you. Horrible. Even the patients hate it, but its the only hospital in Fairbanks.
