Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Great hospital!

5
PROS:

PVHMC is an amazing organization to work for. They truly take care of their own and support growth from within. I started here as a CNA and received nothing but the upmost support when transitioning into the RN role. The pay is highly competative within the area as well. I am so proud to be apart of this organization.

CONS:

None

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

good

PROS:

CONS:

Emergency Room (ER)

Not the greatest institution

1
PROS:

Small hospital so you get to know everyone. They don't cheap out on pay and differentials.

CONS:

I'm originally from LA but I'm a nursing student in Boston. I've worked at #1 hospitals in this city including Massachusetts General, Boston Children's, and Dana Farber. Maybe that's why I had such high expectations when I came to work at this hospital while visiting home. Maybe it's different for nurses versus CNA's, but they treated the help like exactly that, the help. They don't bother to learn your name, or talk to you, or make nice conversation. The nurses I worked with were lazy and rude to the patients if the patients were rude to them. Completely unprofessional. It's like they didn't know how to hold a therapeutic conversation. I was helping a patient as a nurse tried to put a foley in and I watched in horror as she missed twice and instead of leaving it in and getting a new sterile set she just pulled it out and kept trying, but I knew the environment I was working in and knew if I said anything as a "CNA" they would roll their eyes at me. They don't bother talking to their patients, if the patient says they're in pain they just leave the room and fill them with pain medication instead of asking what the patient might want to relieve it. There's no dialogue to build that trusting relationship. They're doubtful of anything the patient says and are immediately snappy and judgmental if the patient asks any questions, they just want to get them transferred or discharged as soon as possible. The nurses aren't patient. We get a lot of Non-English speaking patients and instead of using their phone to dial a simple 4 digit extension for a translator they just talk slower and more loudly as if that suddenly makes patients understand. I was in float pool so believe me, I saw a lot, in the ER, ICU, Telemetry, Med/Surg, etc. Nurses gossiped a LOT about the patients and each other. I was strictly night shifts so maybe that's why everyone was a bit cranky, but that's not an excuse for neglectful patient care. Even management was rude. The people who schedule everyone made lots of mistakes during my short stint there and instead of apologizing they take it out on you and constantly give you attitude. Again, maybe it's different for day shift. But I'm not going to apologize for holding my coworkers to a higher standard because that's what I got used to in top tier hospitals. I've seen what nurses should be capable of and nobody I worked with here held a candle to my previous coworkers, or my previous work environments.
