Pediatric

We're number one!!! (But are we really???)

PROS:

I love the staff that I work with. The nurses are great and my manager amazing! Great teamwork between RNs, RTs, OTs, PTs, techs, phlebotomist, therapists, and other specialist.

CONS:

The hospital is still a business, and I definitely feel a push from administration to save money even if it is not in the best interest of the patient... I was shocked when the financial department met with our nurses to try and maximize savings to the hospital. These business men/women have no understanding or care about the patients and their only job is to save the hospital money. As a nurse, my primary goal is to advocate for the patient. I was disappointed that this meeting had to occur and felt saddened to hear a business persons perspective. To me, the patient is never "just a number." Recent department cuts have laid off many employees, not nurses, but nurses are now taking on more responsibilities of these laid off employees without any monetary compensation. Very displeased with the politics within this hospital. Also I am very displease to be working with certain doctors who do not value the professional opinions of the nursing staff. There is a disconnect between physician and nurse that I have never experienced in any other hospital. Doctors who don't want to teach or explain thing to nurses are not doctor that I want to work with. When questioning orders, I expect a doctor to explain to me a valid, rational reason for their decision, especially since the nurse is the one carrying out orders. "Just do it", or "Because I said so" are responses that I have recieved from some doctors at this hospital. I have also been told by a doctor that "it's not like the nurse is liable." These doctors clearly have no understanding of the role or responsibilities of a nurse. A nurse is the primary caretaker and communicator between many interdisciplinary teams. A nurse is absolutely liable for their actions. Doctors are placed on a pedastal at this hospital and I truly feel that this disconnect creates a culture that encourages egos. Check your ego at the door, because the most import person in this hospital is the patient, not the doctor!

Four Stars

PROS:

Great experience working here. You will see all sorts of medical diagnoses. It also has some of the sickest children, so it can be mentally and physically exhausting. If I had a sick child, I would DEFINITELY bring my child here. It's a very busy teaching hospital, but an awesome experience.
