Ambulatory Care

Magnet Nursing is not ideal for employees

PROS:

Competitive pay, room for growth, clean facility, beautiful campus, excellent physicians, 4:1 ratios enforced, teaching hospital, good communication with hospitalists and most specialists, excellent wound and ostomy RNs, growing lactation department, decent health insurance, 403-B with matching funds, most charge nurses are caring, knowledgeable & helpful, coworkers are almost always helpful, floating practices are decent, good vacation compensation

CONS:

Magnet nursing means high expectations for committee & volunteer work which keeps one away from family because of extra days in meetings, most surgical teams are unlikely to communicate with RNs unless rounding on the surgical floor, upper management does not present with an attitude of appreciation (the last time our VP of nursing said hello when walking through our department was probably about 6 years ago - no kidding), law suits for unlawful pay practices revolving around breaks, make sure to stand up for yourself and asks for breaks & if you think you might not get one you'll have to let your charge nurse know 2 hours prior to when you are supposed to take it, frequent CEO changes,

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Management is very unfair and inconsistent.

PROS:

Most of the nurses are great, and have experience. The doctors are the best!

CONS:

Management rewards the nurses they "like" rather than grading performance. They have their favorites, and those nurses catch all the breaks, while the ones who are not in their click basically get taken advantage of. One manager is known for saying, "We can fire anyone for any reason, without notice; even if we don't like you." And she was not shy about letting employees know that. There is also little consistancy. The CEO changes about every couple of years. They gave been sued for a number of things, including negligence and employees not getting their entitled breaks. They prefer new nurses with less experience over seasoned experienced nurses, and the patients are the ones who suffer because their nurse was unable to recognize when they were in trouble.
