Let's be honest; no hospital is perfect. But...

5
PROS:

I have worked in 20 different hospitals in my 23 years of nursing, many as a traveler. I have never worked for a hospital like Saints. Here, I genuinely care about my co-workers, and they clearly care about me. We have the best collaboration across and within units. For me, administration is the make or break - whether I'm functioning as a direct patient care nurse or in a leadership/educator position. If I don't trust and respect the CNO and other high level administrators, I won't last another day. Here, I know all the nursing directors and CNO very well, and I can pop in to any of their offices or text them any time to discuss my ideas, opinions, or concerns. We have an active nursing council, a dynamic med-surg fellowship, a successful transition-to-practice program, and wellness programs/fitness center available to staff. No place is perfect but this one's the best by far.

CONS:

Well, our building is 110+ years old. It's funky, and not modern at all. I often tell people, "sure, the hospitals around this region are gorgeous and plush and modern, no doubt. But take a look at the people's faces in the hallways... staff's and visitors'. That's where the difference is. Now consider how important the fancy wall hangings and beautiful fountains really are to you. Which would you prefer: smiling, friendly, happy people, or a vibrant, plush waiting room chair." Truth be told, my biggest pet peeve is no outdoor picnic tables outside the cafeteria. Seriously.

Emergency Room (ER)

Home means Saint Mary's

5
PROS:

Employees are happy at Saint Mary's. You are treated like a family member. People smile and recognize each other all the time. Employees are recognized for the hard work they do everyday. Well being activities include resiliency classes, acupuncture, massage, yoga, tea for the soul, and others. Saint Mary's employees know how to celebrate and have fun in themed dress up day events. This is an organization that supports diversity and culture such as employee fair, diversity day, celebrating LGBTQ, and more. Nurses and other employees are supported in attaining specialty certification, higher education, and clinical ladder. There is no other place I would rather be.

CONS:

The building is old but the culture is outstanding. Starbucks is 2 blocks away.

Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU)

Best Hospital in Nevada

5
PROS:

Best coworkers; I work with the absolute best people, we are more like family than coworkers. The nurses here create an environment of accountability where we hold each other to higher standards of practice. We also have great teamwork; there is a positive atmosphere where the nurses are not singled out or left without help on any given day. The hospital administration is very invested in their employees, giving them many opportunities for growth professionally (certification classes, monetary reimbursement for education advancement, tuition reimbursement, clinical ladder, etc.), interdisciplinary recognition (nurses week, hospital week, Nurse of achievement awards, Daisy awards etc.) and emphasizes cultivating culture and diversity within the workplace. The management staff takes a personal approach to all issues with a focus on non-punitive actions to foster a positive, change driven learning environment. As a hospital, Saint Mary's is the most awarded and recognized hospital in Northern Nevada (leapfrog winner 6 times in a row)

CONS:

While staff turnover is inevitable, Saint Mary's nurses do not leave, choosing to move into different roles within the hospital. This is great in itself, but can create the ever problematic floor nursing shortage...
