Overall this is a good hospital, but has some very bad people employed that ruin it.
This review is specifically for triage, on the date of 1-19-19, at around 1 AM - Also spoke with her 1-18-19 as I had been referred here by my doctor. I was referred because I was feeling suicidal. Porter has an outstanding psychiatric facility - My doctor had called in around 2pm, and I had intended to go around 3-4PM - so they were expecting me. I called to check if the referral was in place, confirmed it was, I mentioned I wouldn't be there right away - I was not doing well, and took quite some time motivating myself to go (it isn't an ideal situation or anything fun to check yourself into a psych unit, it is scary) I called en route around 12:30AM on the 19th, to let them know I was officially on my way there - The woman I spoke to, and later saw for triage, asked me if I was intoxicated.....I was not...answered no, and laughed.. found this to be odd. Later realized she assumed I was late because I was doing something 'intoxicating' - When I arrived, the woman who gave me my bracelet and checked me in was very kind - I asked if I could go to the bathroom, I went, and shortly after someone pounded on the door....I came out a moment later to find this woman whose name I still am looking for, waiting for me by triage. I followed her in and was being very nice to her, I am a nice person in general...She took me into triage, took vitals, and was asking questions - I asked if she was the one who received the referral from my doctor....She responded vituperatively, 'We received a call 11 hours ago that you were in immediate danger to yourself, BUT YOU'RE STILL ALIVE' I was taken aback at how this woman working in the hospital, possibly a nurse, wad belittling me, and the severity of the situation, based on the fact that I was ALIVE. She knew I was coming to be checked in to psych, and have to go to the 'special' section of the ER reserved for 'psych patients', - She also was so convinced that I was intoxicated (which she asked several times, I wasn't, at all) I received not only a breathalyzer, and urine analysis, but blood was drawn - everything I know was coming back negative - the primary nurse in psych prior to this made me strip in front of her. After everything came back negative, that nurse was very kind. Whoever it was that did my triage and made this appalling statement, to someone who at that point could have walked out - suicidal - you NEVER know what will set someone off - I was there for help, not to have the seriousness of my state of mind mocked. My brother, Jim, whom I had taken there several times, before he shot himself in the head and died just after turning 25....I feel I have quite a bit of an understanding of the power of words and actions when someone is in this frame of mind. I not only have my own suicidal issues and past attempts, my only sibling who was my best friend, killed himself...I am sure he would have retorted back somehow or left...I am far more introverted and not good at handling these situations.....The hospital is supposed to be a safe place - regardless of what you are there for - you should be treated with respect, PERIOD. If someone is suicidal, taunting and insulting them, really implying they aren't suicidal because they are still alive...is absolutely unacceptable behavior from ANY professional employed there - especially a triage nurse (I am assuming we was a nurse, given she took me through triage and took my vitals and medication/surgical history. I don't know if they have video surveillance with audio anywhere in there, but I am compelled to find out who this was and have it pulled up - I should not have been treated this way, and if she does this again to someone even more fragile, who knows? What if someone snapped and left and not only hurt themvelves but others as well? Or left and killed themselves, taking it as a dare (suicidal people will do a lot to prove they are suffering and serious - including killing themselves) She is SUCH a liability, and clearly in the wrong profession. I will update with a name if I am able to acquire one. IF YOU KNOW THIS WOMAN PLEASE, REPORT HER.
I don't want to leave!
Coworkers are so friendly and helpful, your scheduling requests and time-off request is usually always approved, nurse:patient ratio is max 1:5 but typically closer to 1:4 the majority of the time on 5N unit.
Pay (Colorado is one of the worst states for compensation)
Porter is a wonderful place. It is a great hospital with a community feel. They consistently rank #2 after University Hospital as best hospitals in this region. Patient/nurse ratios are taken seriously, and nurses are well respected in the culture of Porter
