Established in 1895, Huntsville Hospital is a 941-bed hospital. A community-based, not-for-profit institution, Huntsville Hospital is the state’s second largest hospital. Huntsville Hospital serves as the major referral hospital and trauma center for patients throughout north Alabama and southern Tennessee. Huntsville Hospital has more than 800 physicians on the Medical Staff and is a teaching facility for UAB’s Family Practice and Internal Medicine Residency Programs.

Oncology

Great education for staff.

PROS:

Work schedule and continuing education are great for the staff. They work with you as far as 3 or4 12hr shifts per week

CONS:

Understaffed

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

Patient Care

PROS:

I worked with excellent coworkers, my supervisor was very understanding and easily to work with. I had the perfect schedule and very good pay for starting off!

CONS:

Some nurses ( 1-2) were very rude and not very helpful or encouraging.

Oncology

Chemo nurse . taken care of patients with multiple comorbidities.

PROS:

Coworkers and pt population are great. Oncology is my heart. I love making someone's day better. I've learned so much working with oncology patients.

CONS:

Professional,

PROS:

Clean and professional work place. Would recommend to anyone. Helpful and knowledgeable staff as well ad friendly. I would back to this hospital for any procedure weather it be over night or outpatient stay.

CONS:

Med surg

PROS:

Schedule , co-workers, technology advancements, it close and easily accessed, educational facility making on going education a priority

CONS:

Pay scale , ratios, time pressures charting repetitious questions, the nurse turn over is not so good , pay needs adjusted to be comparable with other large medical centers

Medical-Surgical (MS, Med-Surg)

High population of critical patients

PROS:

Huntsville Hospital has Competitive Pay rates, and ample job opportunities. The hospital is in a Convenient Location within town. Great place for new grads to begin their career as nurses and gain the experience needed to become a well rounded individual as a nurse.

CONS:

Nursing shortages and Nurse/patient ratio. Employee Medical Insurance Coverage & Benefits. High turn-over rates in all areas units in the hospital.

Ambulatory Care

RN

PROS:

Great facility with many opportunities to enchance and build on experience. Also many opportunity to transfer to other departments.

CONS:

The pay is minimal. Even PRN pay is not that great. There are a lot of colleges around producing new grads that are eager to just get a job.

Pediatric

RN

PROS:

Huntsville Hospital is a gorgeous facility. There are all fields to work in this huge hospital. Many varieties.

CONS:

Not enough team work. The nurses with experience, regardless of whether they have been at this facility or not are not respected as they should be.

Coronary ICU

Preceptee

PROS:

Most advanced Hospital in the area with state of the art equipment and facilities. Exposed to many situations to help grow in Nursing career.

CONS:

Nurses are treated like a renewable resource being fed by 5 local nursing schools.

Intensive Care (Critical Care, CCU, ICU)

Been great so far

PROS:

Great hardworking coworkers, employees care about the patients & others, managers take care of their employees, great benefits for employees.

CONS:

Pay is not that great as a nurse, the charting system can sometimes be difficult to work with, very understaffed
